Fasting Prayer Mountain
Yoido Full Gospel Church (YFGC) started in the form
of a home worship service in the living room of Pastor
Ja-Sil Choi in Daejo-dong on May 18, 1958. There were
five participants: Dr. Cho, Pastor Choi and her three
children. One day in late June, a month after the
foundation of the church, a woman suffering for seven
years from a stroke was healed. Because of this healing,
the church grew rapidly. Even shamans, fortunetellers,
and street hooligans came to the tent church to seek
a new life. When the membership of the church reached
800, God allowed the completion of Full Gospel Revival
Center at Seodaemun in November 1961. Dr. Cho, having
received pastoral ordination, changed the name of
the church to Full Gospel Central Church in 1962.
As the membership kept growing and reached 3,000 by
1964, four services were held on Sundays. With the
membership reaching 8,000 in 1968, the church decided
to build a new church. On August 19, 1973, Yoido Church
was completed and the first worship service was held.
The membership, which had increased to 100,000 by
October 1979 doubling in two years, grew to become
the largest church in the world. World-known press
including The New York Times began to notice the growth
of YFGC. The membership increased to 400,000 by 1984.
By then the church was renamed Yoido Full Gospel Church
and the membership rose to 700,000 by 1992, about
the time when Dr. Cho was elected chairman of the
executive committee of the World Assemblies of God
Fellowship.
YFGC, continuing its steady growth, claims to be a
sharing church and carries out various social services
including providing medical care for children with
heart disease, providing assistance through Elim Welfare
Town, through blood donation drives and through clothing
donations. In addition, Dr. Cho, with a vision for
world missions, founded the World Missions Department
at YFGC and supports world evangelism through missions
on each continent. He also founded the David Cho Evangelistic
Mission, DCEM, on March 28, 2000 in order to more
systematically and more effectively carry out the
overseas and national crusades that he began leading
30 years ago. DCEM will plan and process Dr. Cho's
national and overseas crusades, increasing his evangelistic
ministry.
