"Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"(Act
19 : 2)
Even though I had spoken in tongues once in Pusan, I did
not have much regard for the baptism of the Holy Spirit
until I went to Bible school. But I knew something was missing
in my life. Jashil Choi, my future coworker and mother-in-law,
was the oldest student in the school. She came early to
class for prayer. As she prayed, she spoke in a strange
language. I laughed at her, "Why do you speak that gibberish?
Speak Korean to God!" She replied, "I have the fullness-the
baptism of the Holy Spirit, and I speak in tongues. When
I do, I receive great edification. When I speak in tongues,
I have more spiritual power than you." Each Saturday a group
of students used to witness in a public park. I would pound
my drum, the group would sing, and all kinds of people gathered
around. Many mocked us; others tried to argue with us. But
in the midst of that, we preached.
I considered myself more polished and more capable than
Jashil Choi. But even though I felt that I preached a wonderful
theological message, not one person accepted Jesus. Then
Jashil Choi would preach. I considered her sermons poor
and unorganized. But then I noticed that when she spoke,
people listened. Suddenly, the whole place was calm. It
was as if some strange wind began to gently blow. Those
same people who mocked us would grow quiet, laugh, clap,
and listen. When she gave an invitation for those who desired
to become born again, people would come to be saved.
I shook my head. I could not understand it. It seemed unfair
of God. When I spoke, people argued with me; but when she
spoke her poor message, they listened, laughed, cried, and
got saved. Why? She was full of the Holy Spirit, surrendered
to Him. So I watched her throughout Bible school. She could
not compete with me academically, but evangelistically she
surpassed me as well as all the other students. I wanted
to have that same kind of power.
Before I graduated, I decided to get away to fast and pray,
choosing Samgak Mountain in Seoul as a retreat. "Father
God," I said, "You've got to give me this baptism of the
Holy Spirit. Choi is 42 years old. She is getting too old
to be used effectively, but I am just 22. She lived in sin
in the world until she was 40. But You see me; I'm a fresh,
young man. Why don't You give me the Holy Spirit? Otherwise,
I will not go into the ministry." I argued and insisted
that way all night. Finally, I felt that my heart was completely
empty. It felt like a big vacuum. The next moment I felt
the presence of the Holy Spirit. I knew that I had received
the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and I too received my prayer
language and began to speak freely in tongues. After that,
when I preached, a holy hush seemed to fall on people and
they listened intently to me. Many were convicted and came
to salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ.
