Introduction : In the time of the Old Testament, the Day of Pentecost was the event that had two meanings. First, it celebrated the day when fifty days after the Israelites had the Passover and came out of Egypt, they received the law on Mt. Sinai. Second, it was the season when on the 50th day after the Passover, they celebrated the offering they gave to God, waving a sheaf of the first grain that they had harvested. Fifty days after Jesus died on the Cross as the Lamb for our salvation on the Passover, God poured out the Holy Spirit, and the first church was born in the upper room of John whose other name was Mark.
1. The Holy Spirit came like the blowing of a violent wind. 1) The wind symbolizes the Spirit of God. (1) God formed Adam and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and he became a living being (Ge 2:7). The breath of life is from the Hebrew, ´ruach´, and it means, ´the breath of God´ or ´God´s breathing´. (2) The breath of life was breathed into the dry bones in the valley of Ezekiel (Eze 37:5). In the English Bible, it is translated into ´breath´, that is ´the breath of God´ or ´God´s breathing´. (3) After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples, breathed His breath, and told them to receive the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is God´s breath and His breathing (Jn 20:22). 2) A strong wind of God´s breathing. (1) In order to drive out unclean, polluted air and get fresh life and clean air, a clean, fresh, strong wind must blow, which can change the environment (Hos 13:3; Jer 13:24). (2) This world is polluted by the devil and demons. In order to purify the environment polluted by the god of this world and the demons of filth, evil, lies, infirmity, and disease, a strong wind of the Holy Spirit must blow (Eze 18:31; Zec 4:6). (3) Only the indwelling of the Holy Spirit brings faith, hope, love, righteousness, peace, and joy (Ro 14:17; 15:13; Jn 7:38).
2. The Holy Spirit came like tongues of fire. 1) A fire brightens darkness - the Holy Spirit reveals Jesus the light in the dark mind of humanity (Jn 1:4; 8:12). 2) A fire burns dirty things - the Holy Spirit extinguishes the desires of the sinful nature (Gal 5:19-21; Eph 4:30). 3) Tongues of fire - the Holy Spirit turns people into witnesses like fire (Ac 1:8; 5:30-32).
3. The Holy Spirit came with fullness. 1) The Holy Spirit is with us and brings the change of inspiration and impression (Jn 14:26; Lk 24:45; 2 Co 5:17). 2) The Holy Spirit dwells in us and makes us bear the fruit of rebirth, internal change, and spiritual life (Jn 3:5; Php 1:9,10; Gal 5:22,23). 3) The Holy Spirit gives us gifts, duties, and abilities - He is poured out on us, that is, the experience of the fullness of the Holy Spirit (1 Co 12:7-11, Ro 12:6-8).
4. The Holy Spirit enabled them to speak in other tongues. 1) Speaking in tongues is very practical experience in the life of faith (1 Co 14:18; 14:39). 2) The parable of tongues. (1) If we migrate to a foreign county, we have to learn the language of that country. (2) Heavenly people have to speak the heavenly language - use the language of salvation. (Ro 10:9,10). ´Let us always speak of the new identity and status, the salvation of spirit, soul, and body (holistic salvation), and the life of grace´ (Isa 53:5; 1 Pe 2:9; 3 Jn 1:2). 3) The tongue rules the whole body (Jas 3:2-5; Pr 18:21; Col 3:17; Eph 4:25,29).
Conclusion : The Holy Spirit who came on the Day of Pentecost is with us forever. He is the Third Person of the triune God. We live with the Holy Spirit of God. He is within us. He comes upon us, and fills us with power.
